I
have been a professional in the mental health field since
1978, and have been in private practice since 1984. My primary
work is with adults in individual psychotherapy. My theoretical
orientation includes an eclectic framework that draws from
psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, attachment, trauma,
and Janetian theories, and an appreciation of the integral
connection between mind and body. I believe psychotherapy
supports the development of good relationships, healthy
boundaries, mindfulness, attention to balance, and empathy
and respect for yourself and others. Areas of specialty
include treatment of complex PTSD and dissociative disorders,
as well as attachment issues, and consultation and training
in these areas, but I also enjoy working with a wide range
of other issues, and have a variety of professional interests.

In
addition to private practice, I am Clinical Director of Metropolitan
Counseling Services, a non-profit, low cost training and psychotherapy
center that serves traumatized populations. I have a strong commitment
to my community and to serving those who otherwise cannot afford
psychotherapy. I love professional writing, and have published
many articles and several book chapters in the field of trauma
and dissociation. Two Dutch colleagues, Onno van der Hart and
Ellert Nijenhuis, and I have published a book on theory and treatment
of chronically traumatized individuals called The
Haunted Self: Structural Dissociation of the Personality and
Treatment of Chronic Traumatization, W. W. Norton, 2006. This
book is included in the Norton Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology.
Teaching is also a great interest of mine, and I provide professional
workshops around the country and internationally.
I
am committed to being an active participant in professional societies
that support my work, and value the enrichment of working with
other colleagues on a regular basis, both here in Atlanta, and
around the world. I currently serve or have previously served
on international professional boards, including the International
Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, the International Society
for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation, the Leadership Council
on Child Abuse and Interpersonal Violence, and the Sensorimotor
Psychotherapy Institute. In 1999 I received the Distinguished
Achievement Award, and in 2001, the Pierre Janet Writing Award
for best publications in the field of dissociation, both from
the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation
(ISSTD). In 2006, my colleagues and I received the Media Award
from ISSTD for our book, The Haunted Self, and I received an Emory
University Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award from the School
of Nursing. |
